Tuesday 24th September.
There’s an area here in Copenhagen called Christiania, where
the hippies live, deal 'herbs' and smoke their heads off most of the day. Nearby
is Our Saviour’s Church with a spire you can climb up on the outside. Today
seems like a good day to tackle them both. Linda advises us to get to the
Church at opening time (10am) to avoid the bottlenecks that form on the stairs
later in the day. We get there just after 10 and have a fairly clear go at the
stairs. There’s a small school group there, but they zip up and back down so
fast, we barely notice them. Except for the young girl crawling up because she’s
freaked out by the height and the young boy sliding down the external copper
stairs on his butt, because he can!

I spy the canal boat tour coming along the
canal and I know exactly what the commentary is saying. The boat slows as it
comes out from under the bridge – photo op!! We did the same thing the other
day. We stand on the tower where we’ll be in all the photos and I wave in the
hope that someone will wave back, and someone does! Yay!!

Linda meets us in the grounds of the Church and we make our
way to Christiania, where no photos are allowed.

This is an area that was a
military base in days gone by. When the military left it to wrack and ruin, the
hippies moved in and took it over as their own commune. We were a bit early for
the full effect, but we saw enough, thanks. There are many garden spaces in
Copenhagen and we walked through one around a man-made lake after we left
Christiania on our way back into the city proper. I wanted to go to the Ny
Carlsberg Glyptotek, an art gallery established by one of the brewing family.
Unfortunately, the French masters were not on show as an exhibit had recently
finished and the process of rearranging the gallery space was underway. Bummer,
but 75DKK each saved. Linda has had to leave us to go home so we decide to try
the National Museum again and today, it’s open. We spend several hours in there
before finding a new way back to the metro station, some might say we got lost,
but that’s being pessimistic!
You've certainly packed a lot of adventures into your time away! I look forward to reading your blog, it's so well written I feel like I'm there with you - but without the sore feet!
ReplyDeleteWhat she said! Wish I was there too. So great that you have done so much. The gardens on todays post look lovely, as have all the gardens you have photographed. Some climb up that tower! You must be soooo fit!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you both! Sometimes I feel like I'm waffling on, but I know it'll be good to look back on. Yes my feet are killing, and I'm not that fit, the tower was not that difficult. Nothing like St Paul's!!
ReplyDeleteI showed Mum this page today, and the one with Notre Dame pic and Arche de Triomph and she was really into it and glad you are having such a good trip.
